from a dad to his little girl

I had the honor of being commissioned for a painting by a father who wanted art for his daughter’s room with a sentiment to keep in her heart. The message he wanted to impart was that when life gets overwhelming, she should “let it go and just enjoy the show,” to quote the Lenka song that inspired him.

I decided to paint it in the style of a children’s book illustration and use a circus for the theme.

I loved the chance to paint in this playful style and was so touched to be involved in this thoughtful gift from a dad to his wife and daughter.

scrimshaw and i won a contest!

whale1I happened upon a cool little exhibit when I was at the Bowers museum of scrimshaw–a carving tradition of American whalers in the late 1800s who passed the time at sea making these intricate drawings on whale bone.

It was my inspiration when I entered a contest for a T-shirt design for our local record store and I’m so excited to say I won! Here’s the art:

Eager to see how the shirt comes out!

Guests can customize one of my cards there themselves or I will hand-letter it for them. Jivita is customizing jewelry and the talented ceramic artist Klai is hand-painting portraits on her cups. If you are in or near Long Beach, come say “hi”, enjoy a glass of bubbly and check out some truly unique, handcrafted work.
